Abstract

The article deals with the implementation of Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) in a STAREX 1600 extruder machine, used in the production of polypropylene bags. The main objective is to improve operational efficiency by reducing downtime and failures, with the application of the eight pillars of TPM and the 5S methodology. The study was carried out through direct observation, collection of operational data and analysis of repair time and major machine failures. The results show an increase in equipment availability from 69% to 86% and a significant reduction in meantime to repair (MTTR), which led to improved production continuity. The authors interpret that the application of TPM optimized both machine performance and final product quality. Compared to previous studies, the present work highlights the importance of well-planned preventive maintenance, which not only reduces failures but also improves the profitability of the operation. In conclusion, the implementation of TPM resulted in greater efficiency and a favorable economic return for the organization, reaffirming its viability as a competitive strategy.
